(2023) Inspired by ex-votos, I make clay hearts for the Skin Goddess which I decorate with symbols that I associate with skin and spirituality. They are not actual ex-votos since they are not made as an act of gratitude for a prayer answered, rather they are incantations made to ask for healing.
These heart offerings inspire a story around them, which I draw and turn into a short animation. The story gives the name to the work, The Singing Hearts.
I create more singing hearts, with the idea that one day they could fill up a small chapel-like room. More visual and information can be found on my website here.
I translate some of the singing hearts into drawings that open up further narratives.
After making each heart-deity, I also draw them free hand with ink and a brush, and later on proceed to colour those. The colouring is experimental and a good way to go back to making after periods away from studio work.
