“You were made to be yourselves. You were made to enrich the world with a sound, a tone, a shadow.”
Hermann Hesse
[…] whenever in my timid life I have shown some courage and originality it has been because of my skin.
John Updike
THE Project
“Started in 2020, the Skin Project brings together visual and narrative investigations and interrogations of my autoimmune skin condition, psoriasis. The work is exploratory, almost like navigating a landscape that keeps changing – the physical landscape of my skin, and the invisible landscape of my mind.
Art journalling has proved crucial in opening to the darkness and shame that surround this disease. These accounts, written and drawn in sketchbooks, are intimate and confined to the privacy of the reading space.
All the works presented as part of the Skin Project are attempts. Some seem entirely distinct but when displayed together, connexions are revealed. Bringing these connexions to the surface is one of my pursuits with this blog.
The Skin Project opens up avenues, possibilities and entire worlds, such as through the personification of skin as the Skin King and the Skin Goddess.
Like my skin, the Skin Project keeps evolving. Producing work on skin has become a necessity because of the cathartic dimension of making art.”
